What is Label

A label is a piece of paper, polymer, cloth, metal, or other material affixed to a container or article, on which is printed a legend, information concerning the product, addresses, etc. A label may also be printed directly on the container or article. Labels can come in all widths, sizes and colors. They can also be made out of different materials such as wax, resin and Valero. This allows the label to be used in different environments such as humid climates, exterior warehouses and low level lighted areas. And http://www.indianbarcode.com easily searches. Labels have many uses: product identification, name tags, advertising, warnings, and other communication. Special types of labels called digital labels (printed through a digital printing) can also have special constructions such as RFID tags, security printing, and sandwich process labels.

History of Barcode labels

In 1948 Bernard Silver, a graduate student at Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA overheard the president of the local food chain, Food Fair, asking one of the deans to research a system to automatically read product information during checkout. Silver told his friend Norman Joseph Woodland about the request, and they started working on a variety of systems. Their first working system used ultraviolet ink, but this proved to fade and was fairly expensive.

Convinced that the system was workable with further development, Woodland left Drexel, moved into his father’s apartment in Florida, and continued working on the system. His next inspiration came from Morse code, and he formed his first barcode from sand on the beach. “I just extended the dots and dashes downwards and made narrow lines and wide lines out of them.”To read them, he adapted technology from optical soundtracks in movies, using a 500-watt light bulb shining through the paper onto an RCA935 photomultiplier tube (from a movie projector) on the far side. He later decided that the system would work better if it were printed as a circle instead of a line, allowing it to be scanned in any direction.

On 20 October 1949 Woodland and Silver filed a patent application for “Classifying Apparatus and Method”, in which they described both the linear and bulls eye printing patterns, as well as the mechanical and electronic systems needed to read the code. The patent was issued on 7 October 1952 as US Patent 2,612,994. In 1951, Woodland moved to IBM and continually tried to interest IBM in developing the system. The company eventually commissioned a report on the idea, which concluded that it was both feasible and interesting, but that processing the resulting information would require equipment that was some time off in the future.

In 1952 Philco purchased their patent, and then sold it to RCA the same year. In 1963 Silver died in a traffic collision.

Pricing products: This is the well known use of the barcodes on labels and stores. Barcodes are used on the products to know the price and other information about products. ID cards: Barcodes are used on ID cards as well. Through a swipe card system, such cards can be scanned. Barcodes on id cards are used to record the employees clocking on and clocking off times, and it also useful to provide security measure to the building.

Patient identification: Barcode labels are used in hospitals to store the information about the patients and their medication details. Barcodes labels are kept on the wristbands which are worn by patients and documents of patients.

Documents: Barcode labels are used or kept on the different documents which are returned to the government offices or other organizations. Date and time of the document return and information about who completed such documents are recorded by using such labels.

Thus, barcode labels are used for many purposes. Because of this the popularity of the barcodes and barcode labels are increasing day by day.
